The Hidden Joys (and Struggles) of the First Month Back to School September as a new teacher has been a whirlwind to say the least. I’ve discovered that planning lessons isn’t just about content, it’s about time, flow, and structure. As a student, I thought of class as one long stretch, something we had to endure. As a tutor, I could easily adapt on the spot with just one learner. But as a teacher, I’ve quickly learned that the flow of time in the classroom is everything and that providing structure, while staying flexible enough to handle the unexpected, is the real work. Tips I’ve Been Given (and am learning to use!) Change tasks every 10 minutes. Middle school attention spans are short. Breaking lessons into smaller chunks keeps energy up and makes transitions smoother. (I need to use this more when I’m working through PowerPoint.) Start with Bell Work.
